AFTER A NEAR FATAL ACCIDENT, which left me being dragged unconscious from the bottom of a diving pool in Russia by my coach and fellow teammate, I went on to achieve my childhood dream of competing at the OLYMPICS.
It was on that journey that I truly discovered who I was and found where my inner strength came from. I began my athletic career as a gymnast at the age of 5 and represented South Africa when I was just 11 years old. Knee surgery put a stop to my gymnastic ambitions in 1998. After finding and switching my attention to diving, I made swift progress, reaching national and international podiums within a few years.
In 2000 shortly after starting my diving career, at the age of 18 and after finishing school, I made the decision to move from South Africa, away from family and friends. With my Father being British, the UK was the best place to realise my dream of being an Olympian.
This took 12 years of hard work, dedication and a magnitude of roller coaster events. On the 27 July 2012 I walked into the London Olympic stadium, 85,000 people screamed and cheered for the British Team, Team GB. And on that day I became an Olympian and my dream came true.
Post London Olympics I was immediately admitted for a spinal fusion as a result of my accident in Russia. It was at that point that I realised that although I had reached my sporting dream it had left me BROKEN physically, mentally and emotionally. Sport was gone and I was left with the bare me, the me that was not able to lead a normal, healthy life, the me that carried forward all her war wounds and battle scars, the me that was now looking at her future and for the first time was worried. This was when I started the process of rebuilding and started my journey to real HEALTH.
Married with two wonderful active toddlers and running my business, I know that life can be CRAZY and doesn’t necessarily fit a mould! I continue to follow my quest for optimal living through nutrition, balance, health and wellbeing. Using my athletic experiences and as a certified Nutritional Health Coach I now coach others to be healthy and fulfil their DREAMS.
Within my blog and pages I speak about the high’s, the lows, the hope and despair that comes with being an Olympic athlete, how these have shaped my journey to health, the love I have for food again, the products I enjoy, what drives me and my passion to help YOU.
